Types of Hand Pruners

Gardeners can be very biased when it comes to naming their favourite tools, but few would deny that a good pair of hand pruners is absolutely essential. You can cut soft stems with a good pair of scissors or flower shears, but sooner or later you will have to go there to prune, trim or cut back hard woody stems and you will be glad you have the right tool for the job. Use a good pair of hand pruners (or possibly a pair) and your two-handed pruners will only be available when larger tree and shrub branches need pruning.

Types of Hand Pruners

There are basically three types of hand pruners: bypass, anvil and ratchet. The bypass garden pruner is probably the most popular, and for good reason. The tool uses two curved blades that bypass each other in the same way as scissor blades, resulting in a nice clean cut. One blade is sharpened at the outer edge and cuts as it slides snugly over the thicker, unsharpened blade.

In contrast, anvil garden pruners have a straight blade that can be closed on a flat edge or anvil. Anvil pruning shears have a slicing action similar to that of a knife on an anvil and work well to remove brittle dead wood, but are not as effective on pliable green wood. They tend to be slightly bulkier than bypass pruners and are therefore more difficult to get close enough to make crotch cuts.

Ratchet garden prunerss are basically anvil pruning shears with a mechanism for executing the cutting action in stages. Ratchet hand pruning shears offer greater leverage for smaller or weaker hands, or when you are cutting larger, stronger stems. If you are doing a lot of pruning, ratchet pruners may save your hands and wrists some strain and fatigue.

Which is better? Each style has its devotees, but bypass manual pruning shears are usually the best choice for most home gardeners due to the tightness and cleanliness of the cut. If possible, you should try out or at least hold the prunerss before you buy. Feel how it feels in your hand, how heavy it is and how easy it is to grip. Some models have a special notch in the cutting blade for trimming wires and plant ties.

Experienced gardeners are likely to choose to have two or more pairs of manual pruning shears - either several different sizes of bypass pruners or an anvil pruning shear and a good bypass pruner.
